An α2-adrenergic antagonist that reverses the effects of xylazine. Yohimbine hydrochloride: 2 g. Excipients q.s.: 100 ml. ACTION : An α2-adrenergic antagonist that reverses the effects of xylazine. INDICATIONS Indicated to reverse the effects of xylazine. As a specific antagonist of presynaptic α2-adrenoreceptors, it competes with xylazine—alone or in combination with ketamine—at the site of action. It acts by reversing the toxic effects of xylazine, such as bradycardia, respiratory depression, and bloating in ruminants, thereby facilitating rapid recovery of the animal. It is intended to achieve immediate recovery of the patient following sedation or general anesthesia. CONTRAINDICATIONS AND WARNINGS Adverse effects have been observed at a higher rate in small animals than in large animals. The use of yohimbine is contraindicated in hypersensitive patients with renal impairment. The safety of its use in pregnant females has not been established. Yohimbine may cause transient CNS excitation, muscle tremors, salivation, increased respiratory rate, and hyperemic mucous membranes. Adverse effects have been observed at a higher rate in small animals than in large animals. Use with caution in combination with other α2-adrenergic agents or CNS stimulants. Its use is prohibited in competition horses and dogs prior to events. Verify that the product’s tamper-evident seal and storage conditions are appropriate prior to use.
