Usage Indications
TORBUTROL DESCRIPTION A centrally acting narcotic analgesic agonist-antagonist with potent antitussive activity, for use in horses. COMPOSITION Butorphanol tartrate: 1 g. Excipients q.s.: 100 ml. ACTION Butorphanol has been shown to have 5 times the analgesic activity of morphine and is 30 times more potent than pentazocine, with minimal cardiopulmonary depressant effects and without causing histamine release following administration, unlike classic agonist analgesics. INDICATIONS Indicated for the relief of colic pain in adult horses and one-year-old foals. It relieves abdominal pain associated with colic, impaction, intussusception, spasmodic and tympanic colic, and postpartum pain. CONTRAINDICATIONS Prescription-only product. As with all medications, keep out of the reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place at temperatures between 15 and 30°C, protected from light. Use with caution when administered in combination with other sedatives and analgesics, as additive effects may occur. RESTRICTIONS ON USE Do not use in horses intended for human consumption. SIDE EFFECTS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS Mild cardiopulmonary depressant effect, which is not dose-dependent but reaches a ceiling; Beyond this ceiling, increasing the dose results in relatively minor depressant effects. There is no evidence to suggest that butorphanol tartrate affects fertility or causes fetal harm. In horses, the following have been reported: mild transient ataxia and sedation. DOSAGE Administer 0.1 mg per kg of body weight (equivalent to 5 ml per 456 kg) intravenously. The dose may be repeated after 3 or 4 hours, but treatment should not exceed 48 hours.
