Description : An injectable dissociative anesthetic containing ketamine for all species. Composition : Ketamine (as hydrochloride): 100 mg. Excipients q.s.: 1 mL. Action : Dissociative anesthetic. Indications : Premedication, induction, and maintenance of anesthesia. The drug of choice for cesarean section. It may be used in combination with other drugs such as: acepromazine, xylazine, diazepam, midazolam, sodium thiopental, Glyceryl guaiacolate ether, and inhalation anesthetics, thereby achieving a better anesthetic outcome by blocking or reducing undesirable side effects associated with ketamine use. Warnings : Do not use in the following cases: animals with seizures; Head trauma with increased intracranial pressure; Glaucoma, and in cases where intraocular pressure must not be increased; Hypertension; Renal failure, especially in cats; Severe hepatic failure. Side Effects: Ketamine causes hypersalivation; Therefore, the use of 1% atropine is recommended when necessary. Cases of apnea may occur. In the event of respiratory arrest, positive-pressure ventilation is indicated; Avoid the use of analgesics. During recovery, a quiet environment with dim lighting, if possible, is recommended. Pain may occur at the site of intramuscular injection. PACKAGING : 20- and 50-ml vials. DOSAGE (in mg/kg) Dogs : - Intravenous: 7 to 10 - Intramuscular: 15 to 25 Feline : - Intravenous: 7 to 10 - Intramuscular: 15 to 25 Equines : - Intravenous: 3 to 5 - Intramuscular: 15 Cattle : - Intravenous: 5 - Intramuscular: 15 Pigs: - Intravenous: 5 - Intramuscular: 10 to 20 Sheep : - Intravenous: 3 - Intramuscular: 10 to 20 Primates : - Intravenous: 1 to 5 - Intramuscular: 5 to 15 Birds : - Intramuscular: 10 to 20 Combining ketamine with other sedatives (xylazine, etc.) or anesthetics (sodium thiopental, etc.) may reduce the dose by up to 50%. The recommended doses may be repeated during the surgical procedure at the discretion of the attending veterinarian. The recommended repeat dose is 50% of the initial dose. In cats, the dose should not exceed twice the amount recommended in the table. When ketamine is used as the sole medication, a dose of 0.045 mg/kg of atropine sulfate is recommended. NOTES : A 6-hour fast is recommended prior to anesthesia. RESTRICTIONS ON USE Do not use in animals intended for human consumption.
