ACTION Sodium ampicillin is a semisynthetic derivative of the penicillin nucleus; It differs from penicillin in its broad spectrum, bactericidal action with high antibacterial potency, and greater activity against bacteria resistant to beta-lactam compounds. The bactericidal activity of ampicillin occurs during the period of active bacterial multiplication, acting to inhibit the synthesis of muranyl peptides that constitute the microorganism’s cell wall. INDICATIONS It is indicated for infections of: the upper and lower respiratory tract (tonsillitis, bronchopneumonia, pleuropneumonia, and pleurisy); The urinary tract and reproductive system; Gastrointestinal infections; And skin infections (dermatitis, pyoderma, furunculosis, pustules, abscesses, wounds, cellulitis, and perianal gland infections), mastitis, cavitary infections such as septic peritonitis, metritis, arthritis, and soft tissue infections in general. Antibiotic of choice for pre- and post-surgical prevention. It may be combined with other bactericidal agents such as gentamicin, amikacin, sulfa/trimethoprim, chloramphenicol, and erythromycin. Susceptible microorganisms include Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including the genera Corynebacterium, Listeria monocytogenes, Pasteurella multocida, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, and Haemophilus influenzae; Anaerobic bacteria such as Fusobacterium, Peptococcus, and Peptostreptococcus, as well as certain types of Bacteroides and Clostridia; Spirochetes, including Leptospira and Borrelia sp. Enterobacteria such as E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella, and Salmonella are also susceptible to ampicillin. Synergy: Ampicillin may be combined with other bactericidal agents such as gentamicin, amikacin, sulfa/trimethoprim, chloramphenicol, and erythromycin. CONTRAINDICATIONS AND WARNINGS Do not administer to patients with a history of sensitivity to penicillins. Do not combine with bacteriostatic agents. Do not mix with alkaline substances, solutions containing carbohydrates, or blood derivatives or protein hydrolysates. Do not mix in the same vial with aminoglycoside agents. Do not ingest. Keep out of the reach of children. The recommended doses and warnings are at the discretion of the treating veterinarian. The medication must be administered immediately after reconstitution. Its stability in solution is guaranteed for up to 48 hours after reconstitution when stored at 4°C. SIDE EFFECTS In cases of anaphylactic shock due to hypersensitivity to penicillins, epinephrine and hydrocortisone should be administered in conjunction with appropriate symptomatic treatment. It has a wide safety margin within the recommended dosage ranges. In cases of iatrogenic overdose, fluid therapy, dialysis, and symptomatic treatment should be administered as appropriate. Furthermore, it is generally well tolerated at the doses and via the routes described in non-allergic patients. Symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea due to dysbiosis, pruritus, or localized reactions at the injection site may occasionally occur. In these cases, antibiotic therapy should be discontinued, and appropriate symptomatic treatment should be provided. DOSAGE Horses: 6 to 10 mg per kg by intramuscular or intravenous injection every 8 to 12 hours (1.5 to 2.5 mL per 100 kg). Cattle and sheep: 10 to 20 mg per kg administered subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or intravenously every 12 hours (2.5 to 5 ml per 100 kg). Pigs: 6 to 8 mg per kg subcutaneously or intramuscularly every 8 to 12 hours (1.5 to 2 ml per 100 kg). Dogs and cats: 5 to 10 mg per kg intravenously or subcutaneously every 6 to 8 hours (0.12 to 0.25 ml per 10 kg). If administered intravenously, administer slowly.
