Usage Indications
Amikavet Benefits : Similar action to gentamicin. Amikacin is resistant to known aminoglycoside-inactivating enzymes that affect gentamicin, tobramycin, and kanamycin. Several gentamicin-resistant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus, and Serratia are susceptible. Description: Broad-spectrum antibiotic. Amikacin is a semisynthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from kanamycin. Composition: Each 100 mL contains: Amikacin 21 g Indications: Indicated for horses, dogs, and cats for all infections of the respiratory, digestive, genitourinary, and osteoarticular systems caused by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria susceptible to amikacin. Therapeutic Action: The spectrum of activity of amikacin includes numerous Gram-negative aerobes and some Gram-positive aerobes. Gram-negative bacteria: species of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus (indole-positive and indole-negative), Pseudomonas, Salmonella, Enterobacter, Serratia, and Shigella. Gram-positive: penicillinase-producing and non-penicillinase-producing Staphylococcus species, including methicillin-resistant strains. However, amikacin is only slightly active against other Gram-positive bacteria: Streptococcus pyogenes, enterococci, and Streptococcus pneumoniae (Diplococcus pneumoniae). Amikacin is resistant to degradation by most of the aminoglycoside-inactivating enzymes known to affect gentamicin, tobramycin, and kanamycin. Several gentamicin-resistant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus, and Serratia are susceptible to amikacin. Dosage and Administration: Dogs and Cats: 20 mg/kg body weight IV, IM, or SC as a single daily dose (approximately 0.1 mL/kg body weight). In young animals, geriatric animals, or those with kidney problems, it is recommended to divide the dose into 4 administrations every 8 hours and monitor for possible side effects. Horses: Young and adult horses: 6 mg/kg body weight IV or IM as a single daily dose (approximately 3 mL/100 kg body weight). Newborn foals: 20–25 mg/kg body weight as a single daily dose (approximately 1–1.2 mL/10 kg body weight). Uterine infusions: 2,000 mg (9.5 mL of the product) mixed with 200 mL of sterile saline solution (0.9% NaCl); Infuse under aseptic conditions daily for 3 consecutive days. Intra-articular administration: 125 mg (0.6 ml of the product) daily. Administration: Intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intra-articular. Species: Horses, dogs, and cats
